[BITF] BACK IN TIME FRIDAY
Summer time is almost here and it is the perfect time to dig up old games and start playing them again! One of my favorite games from the Super Nintendo era is Earthbound. Originally released in 1994 in Japan under the name Mother 2 (the first Mother game never made it to the US), Earthbound is an RPG that is known for it’s quirky and humorous dialog. Over the years, it has become a cult classic and it is easy to see why. This game has been out for nearly 20 years and I still enjoy playing it and I even discover new stuff about it (probably as to do with the fact that I couldn’t understand English when I was a kid but whatever… )
Now obviously there is a lot of things to like about Earthbound, but here are my personal top ten favourite things about this game.
10. The Naming Screen
Ahhhh the naming screen. This is the first thing you see when you start a new game. I just love everything about it. The background music is catchy. The random names the games sets for you if you select “Don’t Care” are great. And you just know you are starting something special when a game ask you what your favorite food and “thing” are. That finale “WOW” when you are done just completes the whole thing perfectly.
9. The Dialog
As mention before, Earthbound is just a funny game overall. There is always a funny description about an item or some NPC that will say something completely random. The dialog is a huge part of what makes this game great.
8. The Enemies
Who doesn’t want to have a fight against a “Cranky Lady”, “Annoying Old Party Man” or better yet “Master Blech”, right? Once again, I just always thought that Earthbound’s enemies were pretty original and it was always fun to see what kind of new enemies would show up.
7. The Graphics
Now I know that with our current technology, these graphics are way out of date, but I really love pixel art. And Earthbound has a really cool design.
Interesting note: the people that worked on Earthbound and Mother 3 did a “side RPG” with the same kind of graphics for the game “Professor Layton and the Last Specter”.
6. The Monkey Cave
I honestly don’t know why I love the Monkey Cave so much, but I do. I just think it’s funny that all these monkeys have special requests for you and need you to find specific items (most of them are found in the cave itself so it’s not that hard). And you get the Teleport spell right after this. IT’S AWESOME!
5. The Music
While the whole soundtrack might pale in comparison to the Final Fantasy series, the Earthbound music is still amazing. To this day, I still remember fondly the Bus and the Bike themes. And the battle theme against the “New Age Retro Hippie” is one of my favourites.
4. The Gameplay
Back in the day Earthbound came out, showing the enemies on the screen was a pretty new idea for RPGs. This is one of the thing that made me love this game. The fact that you could run from the enemies into a new room and come back with them possibly not respawning was an important aspect of the game. And let’s not forget the joy you feel every time one of your characters manage to lend one of those “SMAAAASH!!”
3. The Runaway Five
I just love these guys. Not only do they have an awesome theme music but they also help you out in the game at least 2 times with their music! And come on, they totally are based on the Blues Brothers!
2. The Setting
One of the things that drew me in the most about this game was the setting. I really liked the fact that you were playing this ordinary kid that lives in this normal town. I love that your weapons are baseball bats or yo-yos and that you have to eat hamburgers or fries to restore your health (ok so maybe they weren’t sending that good a message back then. Junk food will not make you healthy kids!). Now obviously there are some “supernatural” elements to the game as well, with the characters being able to use magic and the towns towards the end aren’t so normal, but it is still something that love about this game.
1. Mr Saturn! Boing!
You can’t have a favourite things about Earthbound list without listing Mr Saturn! How can you not love these little guys? They kinda are the mascot of the Mother series. I really like that they had their own special font (even if it was sometimes hard to read) and the way they speak. They are just awesome. Boing! Zoom!
This concludes my top ten things that I love about Earthbound. If you want to check out the game, it will be coming out on the Wii U Virtual Console sometime this year!
